Steroids Issue Becoming ‘The People vs. Clay Matthews’
He was fourth in the NFL in sacks last season after missing four games with a hamstring injury. Matthews has three 10-sack seasons, third-best in Packers history, and nine games with two or more sacks. The son of Clay Matthews Jr., who played linebacker for 19 NFL seasons in Cleveland and Atlanta, and nephew of Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, Matthews is the only player in Packers history to make the Pro Bowl in each of his first four seasons. Matthews also has four interceptions in 58 games, including two that were returned for touchdowns. He’s forced seven fumbles and recovered three, one of which was returned for a score. “Congratulations to Clay, who has quickly developed into a core member of our team,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “His accomplishments and the example he sets on and off the field will be vital to our continued success. We look forward to the rest of his Packers career.” So does Matthews, who will take on a greater leadership role following the Feb. 15 release of eight-time Pro Bowl defensive back Charles Woodson.

If Matthews were being tried in a court of law, the case would have already been thrown out. But unfortunately in the court of public opinion, facts are an afterthought especially in the Steroid Era where physical marvels are considered guilty until proven innocent (just ask Lance Armstrong) and athletes eventually confirming our skepticism in most cases. And in that court, the case against Matthews has been laid out like this by the public: Matthews good friend and fellow linebacker at USC, Brian Cushing, tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug last May after winning NFL Rookie of the Year honors. That shows the NFLDraftBible report at the combine was accurate and that the two have been swapping syringes since USC. Look at Mark McGwire and Tony Mandarich to name a few pro athletes that were never caught but admitted to using the juice. The way athletes mask their drug tests is so far advanced that only a fraction of the athletes using PEDs are caught. How did Matthews go from a 6-1, 165-pound scrub as a junior in high school to a 6-3, 240-pound first round draft pick? Only steroids could get you that big, that fast. The guy clearly started juicing before the 2008 season when he blew up literally as a senior for the Trojans. In four years, hes gone from a college football back-up to a possible NFL Defensive Player of the Year. If it smells like a rat and acts like a rat, it probably is a rat. Just look at his physical appearance. The guy looks like what youd get if you combined the body of a Greek god with the head of a cave man; and his flexing sack dance is clearly a sign of roid rage. Oh, and did we mention hes white? When was the last time you saw a white linebacker play at that level?

Matthews has the higher motor, but Ware can do anything he is asked and is the golden standard for pass rushing linebackers in this league. Though some rank him higher, I’m content to place Polamalu above Matthews because of the way he changes the opposing offense. Matthews brings his pass rushing skills and is at some times unstoppable, but offensive coordinators change their entire game for Polamalu. Clay Matthews, Packers agree on long-term extension
It’s very frustrating.” That frustration – and the defense that causes it – represents the Giants’ best chance to win Sunday’s NFC divisional playoff game at Lambeau Field. For all Aaron Rodgers ‘ excellence, the league’s most efficient quarterback could likely find himself shouldering the entire load, seeking to erase the mistakes of a defense that makes big plays – but gives them up, too. The Packers forced a league-high 31 interceptions, but surrendered a league-worst 300 yards per game and the run defense hasn’t been much better. The Giants may not force Rodgers into another interception (something they did in December’s 38-35 loss to the Pack), they may not watch Mason Crosby , a career 79.8% kicker, miss a 43-yard field goal, and they certainly can’t count on RB James Starks leaving with an ankle injury. But Big Blues Eli Manning -led offense, a unit that’s rediscovered balance over the last month, could match the 447 total yards it piled up against the Pack last month. Green Bay will welcome back linebackers Desmond Bishop and A.J. Hawk , both of whom missed last month’s shootout, yet the Packers remain wary of the Giants’ explosive offense. “They’re playing really good offensive football right now,” says safety Charlie Peprah . “They’re dangerous.” The Packers defensive weaknesses and lack of depth make them all the more dangerous. Pro Bowl safety Nick Collins was shelved with a neck injury in September, and Peprah has struggled as his replacement. Collins was the leader of the defense and an “exceptional athlete,” in Matthews words and without him, the secondary has struggled to stay in sync.
It’s a privacy issue,” Matthews told USA Today Sports . “I know they’re trying to give the fans more of an experience, but what more can you do? We do interviews on the sideline, there’s social media. You can’t leave the parking lot without people swarming your cars.” In April, NFL executive V.P. Eric Grubman announced that all teams will be required to install TV cameras in their locker rooms. Per adage.com, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the footage will only be of the home team and will be from pregame and halftime. The individual teams will have the option to use the video on replay screens and mobile apps. “The reality is that this already exists. Clubs have been doing this. We already do this in winning locker rooms, so this is not unique.
Clay Matthews: Why the Packers LB Is Not the Best Defensive Player in the NFL
Terms of the extension weren’t disclosed by the team, but a source confirmed to ESPN that the extension is for five years and worth about $65 million in new money, including $31 million guaranteed. Fox Sports had earlier reported terms of the deal. Seifert: Smart Move by Pack Elite pass-rushers are a coveted commodity so the Packers made the right move extending Clay Matthews now rather than waiting until his contract expired, Kevin Seifert writes. Blog A source close to the deal told ESPN.com’s Darren Rovell that Matthews will receive $22 million by the end of 2013 and $27 million in the next 12 months. “It feels good,” Matthews said Wednesday during a news conference inside the Packers locker room. “It’s funny, because not a whole lot has changed. I’m happy about it, but for me, it’s nice, it’s very humbling and it’s a blessing, but it’s business as usual for me. I’m glad that they have put their trust in me and belief in me in awarding me this, but Clay Matthews Jr Premier Jersey at the same time you’re going to get the same type of unwavering perseverance on the field and dedication that I’m going to bring day in and day out. I feel good but not much has changed. Matthews tweeted a picture of himself signing the contract before it was officially announced by the team. He wrote: “Trivial amongst the recent tragic news, but happy to continue my career in Green Bay!” Matthews was set to earn a base of $3.73 million this season in the final year of his rookie deal, signed after the Packers made him the 26th pick in the 2009 draft “Clay has been a productive member of our team and we are pleased to be able to come to an agreement that will extend his Packers career,” general manager Ted Thompson said in a statement.

Matthews’ numbers don’t tell the truth
This kid here, hes a special one. Who will win this week’s game between the Ravens and Bengals? Adam Schein and Peter Schrager take sides. Rivalry Rants So, where are the sacks? Matthews and Greene know thats what fans expect, especially after the former notched 17 of them on Green Bays run to winning Super Bowl XLV. Clay Matthews signs extension
“Our free agents are the ones who were up on their contracts. It’s no different than Aaron, myself or whoever’s up next. I’ll leave that to them, but for the most part we’ve had some success here over the last few years in maintaining keep players and I don’t see it to be any different.” Matthews was set to earn a base of $3.73 million this season in the final year of his rookie deal, signed after the Packers made him the 26th pick in the 2009 draft. But the 26-year-old’s price tag has gone up considerably as he has become one of the top linebackers in the NFL. He had 42 1/2 sacks in his first four seasons, fifth-best in the NFL during that span. He has finished in the top five in the league in sacks in two of the last three seasons, with 13 1/2 in 2010 and 13 in 2012.
